Endometriosis diagnostic delay is estimated to be around 7 years, despite the early symptoms’ onset. Early diagnosis, in particular in adolescents, still represents a challenge for clinicians. The diagnostic delay is probably due to an inadequate knowledge of the disease among health professionals, together with the peculiar aspects of this condition in adolescent patients.
The Course is called ‘Mona Lisa smile’, since the presence of endometriosis in adolescence was compared to the mysterious innocence of Mona Lisa smile, underlying the peculiar aspect of the disease in adolescents which make the diagnosis challenging for clinicians.
The aim of the Course is to educate and train health professionals (General Practitioners and General Practioner Residents, Gynecologists and Residents in Gynecology) regarding the diagnosis and treatment of adolescents with a suspect of endometriosis. The early diagnosis would represent an opportunity to reduce the diagnostic delay.
This Course provides the participants a comprehensive overview of this complex disease, explaining the epidemiology, the etiopathogenesis of endometriosis and furthermore how to diagnose and manage endometriosis in adolescents.
The Mona Lisa smile project was conceived in Bologna (University of Bologna UNIBO, Italy; IRCCS Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria di Bologna, Italy) and involves other 4 European partners:
- University of Siena, Italy
- University of Liège, Belgium
- Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain
- Skåne University Hospital, Sweden
The MOOC is structured around three chapters, in addition to a Chapter 0 (Introduction). Each Chapter has modules and lessons consisting of texts, videos, powerpoint and quizzes.
- CHAPTER 1: Patient medical history. This first module focuses on patient medical history and discusses the importance of an accurate anamnesis for suspicion and diagnosis of endometriosis in adolescents. The chapter provides clinicians information’s about peculiar risk factors and symptoms to be investigated
- CHAPTER 2: Diagnosis. The second module focuses on the diagnostic process of endometriosis in adolescents and include physical and radiological examination, which is mainly based on ultrasound, and differential diagnosis.
- CHAPTER 3: Management. This last module focuses on management of endometriosis in adolescents analyzing patient’s goals and counselling, risk and benefits of different treatments (medical therapy, surgical treatment, complementary therapies).
’Mona Lisa smile’: professional education and early diagnosis of endometriosis in adolescence, is funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.
